About Donald Kilpatrick III

Donald Kilpatrick III earned his M.A. in Illustration from Syracuse University in 2006 and moved to Detroit in 2007 to join the faculty of CCS in traditional and digital illustration; he became department chair in 2010. A successful freelance illustrator, Kilpatrick’s work has been featured in publications such as Fortune, the L.A. Times, and the Wall Street Journal. He was involved in the design of the 2002 Olympic medal for the Salt Lake City Winter Games. He has received numerous awards from organizations such as The Society of Illustrators. He has exhibited his artwork in cities including New York, Philadelphia, and Miami. Kilpatrick is a founding member of The Detroit Wood Type Co., and Signal Return.

Noriyuki Misawa designed and created a shoe inspired by a violin, and Donald Kilpatrick carved the soles in keeping with the musical theme.

Noriyuki Misawa Solo Exhibition in London

I was largely captivated by the functional “formative beauty” rather than the the utility of shoes.
I strive to continuously evolve shoes as an art with my skills and my ideas. Currently, in my shoe artworks, I make use of new materials with traditional Japanese techniques, such as leather waste and gold leaf. In this regard, innovative rust processing is utilised for the main art work in this exhibition. As I explore new values of existence with the appellation “the art of the shoe,” which seeks to express the idea of thoroughly pursuing the beauty of shape, I believe that there is a unique world only I can depict.
私は靴の「道具」としての魅力よりはむしろ、機能美を兼ね備えた靴の「造形美」に魅了されました。私の技術やアイデア で靴を芸術として進化させようと日々努力しています。現在の私の靴のアート作品は、革や靴の廃棄物、金箔などの日本の伝統技術、そして錆などの新しい素材や技法 を積極的に取り入れています。「錆」を使った作品は本展のメイン作品です。私はこれからも、道具としての革靴を私の技術やアイデアで昇華し、靴の造形美を徹底的に追求した「靴の芸術」というあらたな存在価値を探求していきます。そこには世の優れたプロダクトデザインにはない、私にしか表現できない独特な世界観が宿っていると信じて。。。
